Allergens and Ingredients

The UK Food Information Amendment, also known as Natasha’s Law, came into effect on the 1st of October 2021 and requires food businesses to provide full ingredient lists and allergen labelling on foods prepackaged for direct sale on the premises.

The legislation was introduced to protect allergy sufferers and give them confidence in the food they buy.

According to the new rules, PPDS (Prepacked for Direct Sale) food must clearly display the following information on the packaging: the name of the food and its full ingredients list, with allergenic ingredients emphasised (for example in bold, italics or a different colour).

These changes apply to businesses in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

For foods prepared to be consumed on-site (eg at a restaurant, pub, canteen) or taken away, best practice is to provide allergen information to customers in writing; and for the information to be accurate, consistent and up to date, ideally taken from chef recipe cards or a dish matrix.  

Usual practice, though, is for a notice to be placed on the menu advising customers to 'ask your server' for allergen information, which is less than ideal.  Misunderstandings can easily happen when information is provided verbally. 

In Robin Road, Food Business Operators can better present allergen and ingredient information that can be accessed by customers quickly and easily whenever and wherever required.

Customers will still be encouraged to check with their server before ordering, but having the information to hand will make this important process much more efficient and reliable.

Regional App for Allergens and Ingredients

We'll create an app for each region in the UK where Food Business Operators can list their menu items and information relating to allergens and ingredients. 

Designed to be affordable, the fee to be included is just £10 per month (plus vat), with initial set-up from £100 (plus vat).

We can also create an individual app for the Food Business Operator to not only present allergen and ingredient information but to also better communicate and engage with customers and contacts.

Where they can present news and views; events; details of outside catering or private dining capability; links to online booking; etc.  There is virtually no limit to the amount of content that can be presented.

Designed to be affordable, the fee is just £25 per month (plus vat), with initial set-up from £100 (plus vat).  The minimum subscription period is 12 months.

This represents a significant subsidy from our usual rates and acknowledges the challenges the hospitality industry has faced these last couple years.

Each Food Business Operator will be able to manage their own information so that they can assure that menu and allergen information is always up to date.
